Dr. Andrew Wong (born in 1936) is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus (Systems Design Engineering) at the University of Waterloo where he is also an Adjunct Professor of the School of Computer Sciences and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Computer Sciences of Dalhousie University. He founded the Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence Laboratory (PAMI Lab) at UW in 1980 and is now the Founding Director of the Lab. Dr. Wong is also the founder, and retired director (93-03) of Virtek Vision International Corporation, a publicly traded company specializing in laser vision technology.
Dr. Wong has made pioneering and significant contributions in the fields of machine intelligence, knowledge based systems, computer vision and intelligent robotics. Dr. Wong holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University; and a B.Sc (Honours) and an M.Sc. from the Hong Kong University. He is an IEEE Fellow for his contribution in machine intelligence, computer vision, and intelligent robotics. He joined the University of Waterloo in 1976. Since 1984, Dr. Wong has served as external examiner and academic advisor for a number of universities in Hong Kong, Singapore and North America.
From 1987 to 1997, Dr. Wong was heavily involved in space robotic projects supported by the Canadian Space Agency. He was awarded four patents and has served as a consultant to many high tech institutes and companies in Canada, United States and Hong Kong.
In 1997, he founded and served as the Chairman of Pattern Discovery Software Systems Limited (PDS) to advance three core technologies: pattern discovery, 3D modeling/animation and genomic pattern synthesis. Its patented pattern discovery software engine has been applied to oil industry, multivariate signal pattern discovery and identification, sociology and pharmaceuticals.
He has authored and co-authored chapters and sections in a number of books on engineering and computer science and has published close to 100 journal papers and many conference papers. He has strong funding records from many different sources including both the Canadian and U.S. federal governments, Centers of Excellence from the Ontario Provincial Government as well numerous grants from the private sector.
Dr. Wong is one of the founders, president (1993-1996) and former chairman (1993-1997) of Virtek Vision International Corporation. Virtek is a publicly traded, Waterloo-based company in laser vision technology, and was rated by The Financial Post as Canada's 6th fastest growing high tech company in 1998. In 1999, it was ranked by Profit Magazine as the 4th fastest growing company in Canada.
Recently, he joined the Board of Envisage Healthcare Solutions, a software company dedicated to research, development and deployment of health information for decision support in patients' diagnosis, therapeutic management and intervention.
